They say variety is the spice of life, and anyone who’s into running knows that this rings true in terms of terrain, scenery and splits. The first few jogs are a blast but it’s not uncommon for them to lose their lust in just a few months’ time. If you’re in the market to try something new, look into these unique road race options around the country.

Bacon races go mainstream
You’ve probably caught wind of races that involve getting covered in paint or chugging a beer at the finish line. But have you heard about the string of bacon runs that have cropped up across the nation? That’s right, a fitness event that’s centered around the mouth-watering meat that America knows and loves.

The Bacon Run is one of the biggest meat-centric races to date. As explained on the event’s website, the race is intentionally 3.1 miles long because no one should have to work that hard for bacon. Runners not only get the saliva-inducing pork but they’re also gifted with a t-shirt, so you can let your bacon freak flag fly!

Krispy Kreme challenge
You eyes aren’t deceiving you. The Krispy Kreme Challenge is neck and neck with bacon races for the top contender of the coolest runs in the country. Not for the weak of stomach, this event is comprised of 2,400 calories. Runners take their marks, and when it’s time to start, they’re expected to eat 12 donuts and run five miles within an hour.

The only real question here is how did something so awesome begin? If you thought it sounded more like a dare, then you’re on point. The event’s website stated that’s how it all started at North Carolina State University. Sign up if you dare.

The zombie run
Perhaps one of the best motivators to completing a race is being chased by zombies, which is exactly what this event is all about. If you’re not keen on running from the dead, then sign up to be a zombie yourself. The entire point of this race is to stay alive until you reach the finish line.

The gist of the race is you run through an obstacle course while people dressed like zombies chase you. The zombies “kill” you by removing a flag from your belt, like in a game of flag football. Whether you make it out alive or not, you’ll receive a t-shirt, bib and brew at the finish line.

The Underwear Run
Take it all off and hit the ground running at this NYC-based event. Although you’ll practically bare it all, you won’t be alone. About 500 people join in to run a 1.7 mile trail that goes straight through Central Park. Don’t be afraid to get a little creative, as pictures on the event’s website demonstrated men running with inflatable pool floats around their waists.

At least it’s held during the summer so you won’t have to worry about staying warm or getting tan lines. Get a feel for the event by volunteering instead of running it to see if it’s right for you.

Don’t forget your gear
Whether you’re signing up for one or all of these fantastic and frightening events, you’ll need to train to some extent. Strap on your black series or white series watch to keep track of your race times. The BA112-1A is $120, and is perfect for runners because it’s durable and water resistant.

Enlist a friend for some motivation or to practice running from the zombies. It’s never too early to start training.
