Ready to exercise on the beach? You have a little bit of prepping to do.

Ready to exercise on the beach? You have a little bit of prepping to do.

So you’re on vacation but you really want to keep up with your workout regime. First of all, good for you! It’s hard to stay in that strict mindset when you could spend all of your time wasting away on your beach towel in the sunshine. But before you head to the sand and get to work, you’ll want to prep for the exercise. After all, it’s not as simple as slipping on your shoes and heading to the treadmill.

Here are a few tips that’ll help you prep for your beach workout this summer:

Dress accordingly
Those cute bikinis and sundresses you packed will have to wait for later – you need to wear the proper attire for fitness. Pay attention to the weather forecast and determine what you’ll wear from there – a comfortable athleisure tank top and matching yoga joggers should do the trick. Just make sure you’re wearing the proper shoes – Popsugar suggested finding a pair with support arches or adding your own inserts for the uneven sandy surfaces you’ll be jogging on.

Apply the sunscreen
You might see this as the perfect opportunity to work on your tan while you run, but you still need to be cautious. Active.com said to make sunscreen a priority, because the sun’s ray are beating down directly overhead and they’re bouncing right off of the water. Make sure you apply sunscreen with at least SPF 15 and consider wearing a hat and sunglasses to protect your head from sunburn.

Bring your water bottle
Just face it: It’s going to be hot and you’re probably going to sweat. Thankfully, you can just jump in the water once you’ve completed your workout. In the meantime, however, make sure you bring a water bottle to hydrate yourself as you perspire. If you start to feel dizzy or you run out of fuel, take a break. Your well-being is more important than pushing through a workout without water!

Create your playlist
Nothing fuels a fitness routine quite like an upbeat playlist. Not only is it a great form of distraction, but The Huffington Post reported that it really puts you in the zone to channel your exercise goals. Choose a variety of songs that get you up and moving and stay away from slow, sentimental songs you’d rather listen to after a break up with a carton of ice cream in hand.

Don’t lose track of time
Sure, you’ve decided to dedicate a chunk of your beach time to getting fit, but that’s not the only reason you’re on vacation! Make sure you remember to wear your favorite BABY-G Watch so you can keep track of the time while you’re on the go. Keep your workout to a maximum of one hour. Once the time is up, meet your friends back at the beach house for some real fun in the sun.
