If the end of summer means you’ll be heading back to school soon, it’s not all bad news. The start of a new school year is the perfect time to go shopping!

Whether you’re about to start classes or just looking to update your wardrobe for the fall, consider these five hot trends before you make your purchases.

1. Flared pants
Give your legs a break and pack away your skinny jeans. This fall you’ll start to see a lot more of their more relaxed cousin, the flared jean. But the trend isn’t just for jeans. High-waisted flared pants are an equally chic option, especially for dressier occasions. Glamour magazine recommended pairing your pants or jeans with a pair of high heels or wedges to create an elongated silhouette that will make your legs look longer.

Flared pants are part of a larger throwback trend celebrating ’70s fashion. Look for bright floral patterns, pantsuits, full-length skirts and other vintages pieces while you’re shopping to take full advantage of the trend. You might even want to raid your mom’s closet for chic statement jewelry pieces from back in the day!

2. The slip dress
Popularized in the ’90s, the slip dress is making a quick comeback this season. Consider something simple in a feminine color or go for the color-blocking trend by choosing a dress with geometric splotches in bold shades. Vogue reported that paneled slip dresses were also spotted in fashion shows for this fall.

One of the benefits of the slip dress is that it’s a style that can be worn in summer or fall. Pick up one during summer sales that you can wear for the last few weeks of hot weather, and then pair it with a trendy jacket to stay warm in the cooler autumn weather.

3. Statement earrings
Big and bold are the keys to dressing your ears well this season. While statement necklaces have been in for a while now, their earring counterparts are just now catching up to the trend. Elle magazine specifically recommended trying to add some bling to your wardrobe with large, sparkly earrings.

Fall will also likely see an increase in the asymmetrical earring trend. Wear a large statement earring in one ear and a more subtle earring in the other for a chic, trendy look. Choosing earrings that are the same color or style is a good way to tie them together while still creating asymmetry.

4. Earthy neutrals
According to the Pantone Color Institute, the authoritative voice on the hottest colors of the season, this fall is a good time to tie earthy neutrals into your wardrobe. Go for shades like dried herb, desert sage or marsala to stay on the edge of fall color trends. For those who love to make a statement, don’t despair! Pantone recommended pairing these earthy tones with a pop of a bold color like cadmium orange or amethyst orchid.

“Juxtaposition of color from opposite sides of the spectrum emphasizes poise and confidence on the runway,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of Pantone. “The Fall 2015 palette is rooted in multi-faceted, androgynous colors that can be worn to portray effortless sophistication across men’s and women’s fashion; it is the first time we are seeing a truly unisex color palette.”

5. High waists
If you think that high-waisted pants are just for soccer moms, think again. A pair of pants with a higher waist can create an exaggerated silhouette that lengthens your legs and highlights the narrowness of your waist. It’s a super flattering style that is perfect for fall. Pair it with a chunky belt, heeled shoes and your favorite blouse for a look that’s both chic and complimentary.
