3 ways to improve your DIY pedicure

A DIY pedicure at home can still be a luxurious experience.

A DIY pedicure at home can still be a luxurious experience.

While regularly treating yourself to a pedicure is a lovely life goal, who really has the time for that? Not to mention the fact that a weekly pedicure habit might put a significant dent in your paycheck. To keep your feet in sandal-worthy shape during the summer months between visits to your favorite nail place, it’s critical to master the DIY pedicure.

You probably already have shaping and polishing down, but what about the little extras? Treat yourself to some foot pampering by adding these three steps to create a luxurious pedicure experience in your own home.

1. Soak your feet
Just because you’re doing your own pedicure doesn’t mean that you have to skip soaking your feet in a warm bath of water. Fill your tub or a large bowl with warm water and add your favorite essential oils or bath salts. Women’s Health magazine recommended adding a cap of witch hazel, a dash of tea tree oil, a few drops of rosemary or peppermint oil and 1/2 cup of Epsom salts for the perfect soak. If you want a short cut, you can find packaged mixes at your local drugstore that you can just mix into the water. Soak your feet for at least five minutes and then rub them briskly with a brush to remove any dead skin.

2. Make it last
Ever notice that a professional manicure seems to last much longer than when you do it yourself? One of the reasons might be that you aren’t adding a base coat and top coat when you paint your nails. Investing in clear polishes specifically made for those purposes will help your pedicure last longer than ever. After you trim and file your toenails, start with a clear base coat. Give the layer time to dry, and then follow up with two to three coats of your favorite colored polish. Once those are dry seal in the color by finishing up with a final top coat of clear polish. You’ll find that adding a top and base layer will help your pedicure weather the wear of daily life more effectively, especially if you add another top coat every couple of days.

3. Finish with lotion
To complete your pampering, wait until your polish is completely dry and then massage your feet with an extra-moisturizing lotion. Slip into a pair of fuzzy socks and wear them for 30 to 60 minutes, monitoring the time with your BABY-G BA110LP-7A watch. This will allow the lotion to completely soak in, leaving your skin soft and smooth. Repeat the process occasionally throughout your week to keep your feet in tip-top shape. Cosmopolitan magazine suggested putting on lotion right before bed and sleeping in your socks.

For the ultimate spa experience, choose a time when you’ll have the house to yourself and won’t feel rushed. Light a few scented candles and turn on some soft background music to create a relaxing atmosphere and enjoy your pampering without interruption.
